Immuta and the Atlan App Framework: From Data Discovery to Governed Access in One Workflow

Data discovery is only valuable when users can act on what they find.

For many enterprises, that is where friction begins. A user identifies the right data asset in a catalog, but then has to leave that experience to open a ticket, track down an owner, wait for approval, and determine whether additional permissions or policy exceptions are required.

Immuta and Atlan are changing that.

Built on the Atlan App Framework, the Immuta Request app is now integrated directly into Atlan, allowing data consumers to move from discovery to access in a single workflow. With a built-in Request Access button embedded in the Atlan interface, users can initiate access requests from the asset they are already viewing, while Immuta manages the full request–approve–provision lifecycle.

At Immuta, we call this model catalog co-existence: Atlan remains the primary experience for discovering, understanding, and collaborating around data, while Immuta handles governed access, approvals, provisioning, policy exceptions, and enforcement.

Connecting discovery directly to access

Previously, Atlan users could discover metadata and identify relevant data assets, but often still relied on manual, slow workflows to access the underlying data. That created a gap between finding data and actually being able to use it.

The Immuta and Atlan integration closes that gap.

Now, users can request access immediately after identifying the right asset in Atlan. They do not need to leave the catalog, open a disconnected ticket, or manually search for the right approval path. The request starts where the user already is.

From there, Immuta takes over.

Access requests initiated in Atlan are handled end-to-end by Immuta. Immuta evaluates each request based on the user’s entitlements, the sensitivity and classification of the data, and the policies that apply. The workflow can include approvals, provisioning, and exceptions to masking policies when users need additional access to protected data.

The result is a simpler experience for data consumers and a more scalable process for governance teams.

General Motors’ steward ticket pain helped shape the integration

This integration was shaped by real enterprise challenges, including General Motors’ needs.

At GM, data stewards were overwhelmed by the volume of access tickets. They had to determine who was requesting access, what data they needed, which approvals were required, and how to process those requests consistently. The process was time-consuming for stewards and frustrating for users who needed timely access to data.

Together, Immuta and Atlan created a much simpler mechanism for both requesting and processing access.

Users can now start in Atlan, find the data they need, and initiate an Immuta-powered access request directly from the asset they are viewing. Immuta then manages the request, approval, provisioning, and exception workflows behind the scenes.

The impact is significant: access requests that previously took weeks can now be processed in less than a day, and in many cases, in just minutes.

This is where the partnership becomes especially powerful. Atlan provides the familiar catalog experience users already know. Immuta provides the governed access workflow that ensures requests are processed efficiently and policies are applied consistently.

Together, Immuta and Atlan make the experience easier for users, more efficient for stewards, and more reliable for the business.

Why it matters

The Atlan App Framework is what makes this experience feel native.

Rather than sending users out of Atlan and into a separate process, the Immuta Request app brings governed access directly into the catalog experience. For data consumers, it feels like a first-class Atlan capability: they find the asset, click Request Access, and move through the right workflow without needing to understand the complexity behind the scenes.

That is what makes the integration so powerful for joint Immuta and Atlan customers. The App Framework enables Immuta to deliver its governance, policy, approval, provisioning, and exception management capabilities in a way that feels elegant and simple to end users.

The impact is clear:

  • A native-feeling user experience: Data consumers can request access directly from the asset they are viewing in Atlan, making governed access feel like a built-in part of the catalog.
  • Faster access for more users: Analysts, data scientists, business users, and other consumers can request access at the moment of discovery, even if they previously did not know how to open the right ticket or navigate the internal access process.
  • Fewer manual tickets for stewards: Data stewards get clearer request context and a more efficient process for reviewing, approving, and managing access.
  • Governance that stays in control: Requests initiated in Atlan are still handled through Immuta, ensuring established governance processes, policies, approvals, provisioning, and exceptions are not bypassed.
  • A simpler way to scale Immuta’s power: Immuta’s access governance capabilities become easier for data consumers to use, while making life easier for stewards and governance teams.

The result is a streamlined experience that accelerates data access without compromising governance.

Looking ahead: semantic and agentic data access

The Immuta and Atlan partnership begins with improving the human experience of data access. But the next phase goes further.

Immuta and Atlan are exploring deeper integration between Immuta’s Agentic Data Access capabilities and Atlan’s semantic layer.

As AI agents become part of enterprise analytics, they will need more than access to data. They will need to understand what data means, how it relates to business concepts, what policies apply, and whether additional data is available that could improve the accuracy of an answer.

Atlan’s semantic layer can help provide business context: metrics, definitions, relationships, and trusted data products.

Immuta’s Agentic Data Access module can help provide governed access context: what a human user or agent is entitled to access, where restrictions apply, and when additional access should be requested.

Together, this creates a path toward governed agentic data access.

For example, an AI agent may be asked to answer a business question and determine that more data would improve the accuracy of the response. Instead of producing an incomplete answer or attempting to work around governance, the agent should be able to recognize the access gap and request permission on behalf of the human user through a governed workflow.

That is the future Immuta and Atlan are building toward: agents that can understand data context, identify when more data is needed, and initiate access requests responsibly.

From discovery to access, and beyond

The Immuta Request app, built on the Atlan App Framework, turns the catalog into a launch point for governed data access.

Users can find the right asset in Atlan, request access in the flow of discovery, and move through a policy-aware process without friction. Immuta manages the full request–approve–provision lifecycle, including masking policy exceptions, while Atlan remains the trusted place where users discover and understand data.

That means faster access for consumers, fewer manual tickets for stewards, stronger oversight for governance teams, and faster time to trusted data for the business.

But this is only the start.

Together, Immuta and Atlan are building toward the next era of governed data access: one where AI agents can understand data context, recognize access gaps, and request permission on behalf of humans, all within policy.

Today, Immuta and Atlan are closing the gap between discovery and access. Tomorrow, we are helping define governed access for the agentic enterprise.

This is the future of data access: native in the catalog, intelligent in the workflow, governed by design, and built for AI.

Governed access for AI agents is closer than you think.

Immuta is extending policy-driven provisioning to AI agents, so they can discover, request, and access data responsibly, just like humans do.
